On-Site 3D Scanning When the Part Cannot Leave the Plant

Not every part fits in a crate to South Windsor, CT. Engine modules, airframe structure, production fixtures, and installed plant equipment need the instrument to travel. On-site structured light scanning and CMM-style measurement is a core Bolton Works capability — more than 160 customer-site projects since 2005.

What we need before we roll

  • Object size, access, and whether it is installed
  • Lighting and vibration environment
  • Required accuracy and deliverable (mesh, colormap, CAD)
  • Safety, badging, and IT rules at the site
  • Whether we can apply dots, spray, or must work as-is

What “on-site” still is not

A plant floor is not a metrology lab. We plan accordingly: more setups, shorter individual scans, documented alignments, and, when needed, a lab CMM correlation on a coupon or a removable feature. The goal is usable, defensible data — not a scan for its own sake.
